Metrogyl IV (Metronidazole Injectio)

Composition: Metronidazole 500 mg in 100 mL solution (commonly available as Metrogyl IV 100 mL)

Mechanism of Action: Disrupts DNA synthesis in anaerobic organisms and protozoa, leading to cell death

Uses:

• Treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections (intra-abdominal, gynecologic, dental, pelvic, septicemia)

• Prophylaxis in surgeries with high risk of anaerobic contamination (e.g., colorectal surgery)

• Management of amebiasis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis (when oral not feasible)

Benefits:

• Fast-acting, broad coverage against anaerobes

• Ideal for patients unable to take oral medication

• Can be used in combination with other antibiotics

Dosage: Usually 500 mg IV every 8 hours (adjust based on weight/condition)

Caution:

• Avoid alcohol during and 48 hrs after therapy (disulfiram-like reaction)

• May cause nausea, metallic taste, headache

• Monitor liver function in long-term use
