D5 Saline (5% Dextrose in 0.9% Sodium Chloride)

• Composition (per 1000 mL):

• • Dextrose (glucose): 50 g (5%)

  • Sodium Chloride: 9 g (0.9%)

• Osmolarity: ~560 mOsm/L

• pH: ~4.5

• Uses:

  • Dehydration with calorie needs

  • Hypoglycemia prevention during IV therapy

  • Maintenance fluid in post-op patients or during NPO

• Benefits:

  • Restores fluid, electrolytes, and provides energy

  • Good for patients who need both glucose and sodium

• Caution:

  • Monitor for fluid overload, hyperglycemia, and electrolyte imbalance

  • Use cautiously in diabetic or renal-impaired patients
